Choose
Your Synonyms Wisely:
Every
strong brand can be equated with a synonym. For example,
Trump = real estate; Louis Vuitton = luxury; BMW =
performance. Think about what your own brand means, and
then choose a synonym to describe it. Next, be true to your
personal brand and try not to waver, this will help to
establish brand awareness.
Humility
is the Key to Comeback:
Remember
the Martha Stewart of 2 years ago? The Domestic Diva
operated one of the world’s most successful brands in home
goods, despite her image of a harsh taskmaster. But in
reinventing herself, Martha has had to shed that image—no
easy task after spending a very public five-months in prison
for committing perjury. However, after baking a wonderfully
delicious humble pie, the “new” Martha is a kinder and
gentler business woman, who remains connected to her
company’s brand. Martha teaches us that a show of humility
is the key to any personal branding comeback.
Drop the
Title:
Forget what it says on your business cards. Ask yourself:
What do I do that adds remarkable, measurable, distinguished
value? “The Donald” has captured the imagination and
television sets of millions of American reality television
fans, by being dubbed “the dealmaker.” Try dropping your
own title as a “manager” or “vice-president” and start
developing your personal brand by thinking about how you’d
like to be known.
Go Ahead and Promote “You”:
Branding campaigns are about visibility.
The Trump
brand is worth millions largely due to its strategy of
taking full advantage of Public Relations opportunities.
PR outreach such as story placements within newspapers,
newsletters, and internal publications can help you build-up
your own brand cadre. And good PR builds on itself—once
you’ve
established a solid portfolio of PR, you’ll have more
materials to go out and market yourself with.
Take a
Power Trip (Seriously):
Gaining
and using power are critical tools for growing your brand.
Brands are attractive because of the power that they
project. Even in your own Boardroom you can make some
intelligent power moves. Try leading a meeting or taking on
a project that is out of your comfort zone. This will
demonstrate your power as a credible leader and add-value to
your brand.
Everyone is Brand-worthy:
Remember, you're every bit as brand-worthy as Trump or
Martha Stewart. It’s time to start thinking like a reality
television star! Personal branding can eliminate the
competition, showcase your added-value and skills, and help
you to take charge as an expert.
